Chalet Pian De La Mola was renovated and is now run by the ‘Regola di San Nicolò di Comelico’ in accordance with one of the aims of this ancient institution, namely to preserve and promote tourism as a new resource for the local economy.
Managing the Collective Heritage
The ‘Regola di San Nicolò’ is one of the 16 ‘Regole’ (which literally means ‘rules’) in the Comelico area. They are institutions with overlapping municipal boundaries which collectively manage the local natural resources.
Over the centuries, the ‘Regole’, which still evoke a strong sense of belonging, have played a fundamental role in the growth of the area. They have managed the community’s collective assets, built aqueducts, buildings and places of worship, funded education, commissioned works of art and helped the needy.
The word “Regole” has two meaning. Firstly, it means the natural resources — woods, meadows and pastures — which have not been divided up, sold or changed ownership over the years. Secondly, the word refers to the group of people, the Regolieri, who jointly manage these resources, generation after generation.
Past and present
The ‘Regole’ were created to record in writing the practices used to collectively manage the pastures, meadows and woods. These laws, called laudi, still form the basis of the statutes that govern these practices, which are inspired by the principles of solidarity, fairness and collective management of resources.
With the fall of the Venetian Republic, first the French and then the Austrians abolished the ‘Regole’.
After a long legal battle, the ‘Regole’ were recognised and reinstated, with the land remaining undivided to present day. Over the centuries, the ‘Regole’ have administrated the natural resources carefully, using the income from the sale of timber to support the community.
In the Seventies, the price of timber fell, reducing the financial reach of the ‘Regole’, which however continued to manage their collective assets.
On 25 November 2016, the Meeting of the ‘Regola di San Nicolò’ amended its Statute, extending its purposes to include the promotion and development of tourism, an important resource for the local economy.
